Kaihara was established in the Ashina district (now part of Fukuyama City) in Hiroshima Prefecture. This area has a long history as a flourishing district for bingo-kasuri, one of Japan’s three main styles of a textile technique (kasuri) where the fabric is woven from fibers that have been dyed to create patterns and images . Our founder, Sukejiro Kaihara, was a skilled bingo-kasuri maker who originally opened Kaihara to sell handspun indigo kasuri in 1893.
As the way people dressed changed , we turned our extensive knowledge of bingo-kasuri to the denim industry. When we entered the denim manufacturing business, Japanese manufacturers were struggling to make denim that faded when worn, a major characteristic of other denim. We recreated the technique used for American denim and succeeded in developing a rope dyeing machine that enabled authentic denim to be produced in Japan.
Kaihara denim garnered global attention in 1973 when Levi Strauss adopted it for their products, and we are now widely known as a major player in the denim industry.
