It is said that the origins of the Miyoshi Doll began in 1854 when Osaki Chuemon moved to Agari-mura (now Miyoshi-cho, Miyoshi-shi) in Bingo from Sojiki-mura (now Sojiki-cho, Ota-shi, Shimane) in Sekishu and built a kiln in “Miyanokyo” to manufacture clay dolls. The Miyoshi Doll is composed of “Tenjin” with Sugawara no Michizane as a model with “male” and “female” and “other dolls (about 140 kinds).”
Using good quality clay produced in Miyoshi, dolls are formed and sintered and colored by distempering and fastened by gluing and as they have unique gloss, they are also called “light dolls.” As gifts for the 1st seasonal festival, they were typically displayed on the seasonal festival of children on April 3 (old lunar calendar) and because traditional display among common folk with wishes of sound health and growth of children.
