Hatsukaichi, Place of Origin of Kendama

It is said that “Kendama” developed during Japan in the Edo Era, but at that time, it was a toy only with a sword and a ball. In the Meiji Era, Egusa Hamaji, a craftsman from Kure, Hiroshima improved the shape of an old “Kendama” and developed “Nichigetsu (Sun and Moon) Ball,” which is said to be the original model of the present Kendama. At that time, in Hatsukaichi-shi, wooden toy manufacturing started production and various crafts were produced, utilizing the potter wheel technique, which were preferred by tourists buying souvenirs from Miyajima. Egusa, focused on the woodcraft skills of Hatsukaichi, requested mass production of “Nichigetsu Ball.” Since it is the region that first succeeded in the mass production of “Nichigetsu Ball,” the original model of the present “Kendama,” it began to be called “Hatsukaichi, Place of Origin of Kendama.”

“Nichigetsu Ball” regarded as the original model of the present “Kendama”

“Mugen muso”

IWATA MOKKO Inc. has manufactured “Kumano-fude” and “Kendama,” traditional Japanese crafts for about 20 years as it excelled at the woodwork potter wheel and coating. The kendama “Mugen,” which had been manufactured from 2003 to 2008, ceased production once, but a restoration project was launched by the voices of advisers. After many modifications, “Mugen muso” was created in 2013. It has developed into “Kendama” which is easier to complete by adoption of the tip made of resin, reducing damage to the ball and of screws enabling replacement.

●Care for materials
By drying wood cut during a limited season for two years for the shortest ones and as long as ten years for the longest ones depending on the wood materials, users can enjoy beautiful wood grains for many years without cracks or distortions after processing. It is another way that we show our commitment creating an ability to feel like the annular rings by finishing with the best wood grains.
