Matsuso Co., Ltd. began when our founder Shinbei Matsuoka began making furniture in 1855. We produce classic furniture that can be used for 100 or even 200 years, such as chests of drawers made with traditional Japanese techniques such as sashimono, a technique where parts are joined with tenons in frames instead of nails, and various products finished with kyo-urushi , a lacquer technique we have refined in our Kyoto factory.
In recent years, we have ventured into new uses of our kyo-urushi technique, such as “mirror finishing” where we apply many layers of polyester resin in the same way that lacquer is applied. Our outstanding craftsmanship has attracted the attention of the shipbuilding industry, which has seen us commissioned for interior design projects on ships. We are constantly working to refine our techniques so that we can provide customers with an even higher caliber of classic furniture.

SHINBEY『#1 “JEWELRY”』

This jewelry box is designed to draw out the inherent beauty of the materials. The beautiful curved lines are created by a traditional technique called kyokumen-kako. Every detail is lovingly crafted by artisans who are constantly refining their technique.

SHINBEY (lacquered bangles)

These lacquered bangles were developed for women who have a metal allergy or do not want to wear heavy metal bangles.
Each bangle is handmade by our craftspeople through a similar process to Matsuso’s lacquered furniture. We take the time to achieve the ultimate quality, with the drying process of the lacquer alone taking three months.
