“Kawajirifude” is manufactured in Kawajiri-cho, Kure City, and it is said that the brushes manufactured by Yaekichi Ueno at the end of the Edo Period are the actual predecessors. Following in the wake of Kyofude (Kyo Brush), its flexible tip is suited for Sosho (cursive characters), kana characters and the detailed lines of Japanese Paintings. With the hair blending technique “Nerimaze (knead and mix)” generally used to create the brushes, Kawajirifude is manufactured by a single artisan from start to finish, and therefore, is not suited for mass production. On the other hand, the finished products are high quality brushes as they require advanced techniques. In 2004, Kawajirifude was designated as a “traditional craft” by the Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry.

A small brush with everything teachers want from a calligraphy brush
When conventional calligraphy brushes are washed, the bristles harden and the glue comes out, making it difficult to write. We combined Kawajiri’s traditional techniques with unique new technology and production methods to create a small brush that can be washed easily and lasts for a long time.
