Located about 20km east of Hiroshima City in a natural basin surrounded by mountains in all four directions, Kumano-cho, Hiroshima is a town with a population of 25,000 that is known as the “town of brushes.” The precise manufacturing technique of Kumanofude has been passed down since the end of the Edo period through the efforts and passion of its people. In 1975, it was designated as a “traditional craft” by the Minister of International Trade and Industry (the present Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry), a first for the writing brush industry in Japan. At present, 22 traditional craftsmen are actively involved in the industry. In addition, along with writing brushes, painting brushes and cosmetic brushes, which began full-scale production after the Pacific War, by taking advantage of writing brush manufacturing techniques, are also major pillars of Kumano-cho.
